Rachin Ravindra: Who is the Indian-origin Kiwi all-rounder who has thrashed defending champions England's bowling?
It was hailed as a complete team performance by New Zealand when defending champions England suffered a heavy nine-wicket defeat at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad yesterday.
However, the player who grabbed all the attention was the 23-year-old all-rounder Rachin Ravindra, despite not giving a chance to tackle England's strong batting with an excellent bowling and fielding performance.
Before the start of this tournament, Ravinder's bowling was definitely being talked about, but nobody knew that he would completely destroy England's bowling by playing very aggressive batting at number three.
Left-arm off-spin all-rounder Rachin Ravindra's father hails from India, but Ravindra himself was born on 18 November 1999 in Wellington.
His father's name is Ravi Krishnamurthy, a software professional in Bangalore who migrated to New Zealand in the 1990s.
He himself was so fond of cricket that when Ravindra was born, he named him 'Rachan'. A combination of Rahul Dravid's name 'Ra' and Sachin Tendulkar's 'Chin', the name reflects his love for cricket. In an interview, Rachin Ravindra had said that 'My parents liked Rahul and Sachin a lot. These were two great players and I am lucky to have their namesBut he loved Sachin Tendulkar as a child and his current favorite players include Virat Kohli and Kane Williamson.
His father Ravi Krishnamurthy played many cricket matches in Bangalore during his youth and is the founder of the cricket club 'Hit Hawks' in New Zealand.
Ravindra's father Krishnamurthy, also an ICC umpire, used to play cricket with former fast bowler Jawaharlal Srinath and fondly called him 'Sri Mama'.
Ravindra's batting had fewer accidental strokes and more strokes like a true batsman. He played a brilliant innings of 123 runs with the help of eleven fours and five sixes and did not allow New Zealand to go into defensive mode at any point.
He also hit fast bowlers like Mark Wood for sixes with great satisfaction and as a batsman was able to make his debut on the biggest stage of world cricket.
It should be noted that the opening match of the World Cup, which is usually between the host team and another team, this time was between two teams that went to the finals of the last World Cup. And perhaps this was the reason why there were no people in most of the seats in the Narendra Modi Stadium with a capacity of 130,000 spectators.
New Zealand won the toss and elected to bowl first, which was a surprise to many, but New Zealand's bowling swept away all whispers and managed to restrict England to just 282 runs.
New Zealand captain Tom Latham also showed good captaincy and used Glenn Phillips well and he also took two wickets for New Zealand. In reply, New Zealand crossed the set target in just the 37th over for the loss of just one wicket and thus started the World Cup on a winning note.
On behalf of New Zealand, Conway played a brilliant innings of 152 runs which included 18 fours and three sixes.
.Pakistan gave the game another superstar.
While on the one hand the Kiwi batsmen are being praised, the defending champion England's performance is being disappointed.
Rachin Ravindra watched the 2019 World Cup final at a Bangalore bar as a 19-year-old and now, four years later, he scored an 82-ball century in the opening match of the 2023 World Cup, wrote Matt Roller.Cricket analyst Harsha Bogle said that 'New Zealand were playing the 50-over World Cup like a T20 match.'
Former Pakistan captain Urooj Mumtaz said that apparently the air has gone out of England's balloon because there were high expectations.
But some users expressed that Rachin Ravindra got this confidence from the warm-up match against Pakistan. "We have given this game another superstar," said Osama, a Pakistani user.
It should be noted that in this warm-up match of the World Cup, Rachin Ravindra played an innings of 92 runs off 72 balls against Pakistani bowlers including Haris Rauf, which included 16 fours and a six.Interestingly, Rachin Ravindra made his List A and First Class debut against Pakistan while playing for the New Zealand A team.
He was part of the New Zealand team this year against which Pakistan won the ODI series four to one.
